Harmonic maps have proven useful in the study of negatively curved manifolds. We will discuss the idea of a simplicial harmonic map, introduced in recent joint work with Peter Scott. These combine aspects of the smooth and discrete settings and give a simple yet powerful method to control the geometry of families of surfaces,. We will indicate both topological and computational applications.
