Alternating sign matrices are generalisations of permutation matrices, and occur naturally in determinant deformations. This talk will be about the intriguing connections of these matrices to a statistical mechanical model of fully packed polygons on the square lattice, to punctured symmetric plane partitions, to the Temperley-Lieb algebra and their role in answering questions about critical percolation.

No prior knowledge of any of the topics mentioned is assumed
