We will discuss the problem of recovering the shape of a compact manifold from its geometric characteristic called the Ricci curvature. This problem comes down to solving a partial di fferential equation of second order.
It has been intensively studied by mathematicians since the early 1980's. In the fi rst part of the talk, we will review the history of the subject. After that, our focus will be on new results regarding the case where the manifold in question is a solid torus.
