We trace the evolution of the mathematical study of random partitions, from its initial appearance in population genetics (Ewens, 1972) and phylogenetics (Kingman, 1982) to its natural occurrence in number theory (Donnelly & Grimmett, 1993) and up through its modern connections to probability theory and stochastic processes (Pitman, 2006).  In applications, random partitions arise as models for clustering and classification in statistical machine learning.  We demonstrate this latter task with an application from genetics.
