Rachael Barnes

Aircraft Performance Lead,
Virgin Australia

Bachelor of Science
Bachelor of Engineering

Studying mathematics at UQ has helped Rachael Barnes’ career take an upward trajectory with Virgin Australia.

“I was required to have an engineering or mathematical background to be considered for the role,” she said.

Rachael is responsible for the Aircraft Performance discipline within the Flight Operations Engineering Team at Virgin Australia.

“This includes the general coordination of performance activities with the team and oversight of performance content in company documentation,” she said.

“I analyse aircraft performance data that impact our fleets in the short and long terms and provide timely solutions.

“This tends to involve the design and management of airborne and ground based software that optimises aircraft and engine performance.”

Rachael chose to study at UQ because she determined that for the majors she wanted to study, UQ lecturers had the best knowledge to impart.

“My fellow students and lecturers made my time at UQ,” she said.

“Being able to interact with like-minded people from whom I could learn everyday allowed me to grow from a professional and personal perspective.”

Highlights of her time at UQ included teaching mathematics students courses including MATH1051, MATH1052 and MATH2100.

“I really enjoyed tutoring other students and sharing information,” she said.

Since leaving UQ, Rachael has received a Brand Ambassador award from Virgin’s executive team, for service excellence.

“I love my job.  For now, I plan to stay here for the coming years until another challenge in Aeronautical Engineering or Mathematics presents itself,” she said.
