The Dedekind eta function is one of the most important and intriguing functions in number theory, and plays a central role in the theory of partitions and modular forms. Many famous mathematicians have studied the Dedekind eta functions, including Euler, Hardy, Ramanujan, Serre and Deligne. In this talk I will survey some of their most important results as well as a number of open problems.
