FINDING A SUPERVISOR FOR MPHIL/PHD

Before submitting an application, you must find a Principal Advisor (i.e. PhD or MPhil thesis supervisor) who agrees to supervise your MPhil or PhD project.  The first step is to browse through the areas of research currently offered within SMP: http://www.smp.uq.edu.au/research.

When following the links to specific areas of research you will find contact details for the academics who are researching in these areas.  There is also a list of current research projects http://www.smp.uq.edu.au/smp-research-projects

Once you have identified an academic who you think could be a potential PhD supervisor, please contact them directly by email, sending your CV, scanned copies of your academic transcripts, some ideas for a research project, any recommendation letters or referee reports you may already have, and copies of any papers that you have published or submitted.  If they agree to supervise your PhD project, then you can then apply online here: https://graduate-school.uq.edu.au/node/69

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR DOMESTIC APPLICANTS

Domestic applicants can apply for a living allowance scholarship (APA/UQRS) by ticking the relevant box in the Online Application.  There are two scholarship rounds per year.  The key dates and deadlines for these can be found here https://graduate-school.uq.edu.au/scholarships at which time SMP ranks all domestic Applications for Admission and Scholarship in order of merit.  This list is presented to the UQ Graduate School for their consideration.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

If you are not sponsored or self-funded, you can apply for a Scholarship at UQ (IPRS and UQI). Scholarships for international applicants (covering tuition fees and living allowance) are very competitive. Scholarship rounds are held twice per year.  The key dates and deadlines for these can be found here https://graduate-school.uq.edu.au/scholarships, at which time SMP ranks all international Applications for Admission and Scholarship in order of merit.  It is worth bearing in mind that successful applicants tend to have both outstanding prior qualifications, and at least one paper published, accepted, or submitted to a peer-reviewed journal.
