Congratulations to University of Queensland graduate Rishi Goel, who has been selected as a 2026 Gates Cambridge Scholar.
Rishi completed his Bachelor of Advanced Science (Physics) at UQ in 2025, receiving first class honours and graduating as valedictorian. It was during his time at UQ that Rishi became deeply interested in the societal implications of emerging technologies, inspired by the concept of "weapons of math destruction".
This fascination led Rishi to explore quantum technologies, particularly the interface between quantum and classical resources, where foundational physics can have industrial applications.
Now a PhD student, Rishi’s studies in Cambridge will focus on theoretical quantum information and aim to advance our understanding of these systems in a way that is equitable, accessible, and oriented towards the common good.
"Practically, I will explore avenues for quantum advantage through quasiprobability frameworks, metrological algorithms and contextuality," Rishi said.
"I hope to help develop quantum tools which will revolutionise healthcare, address climate challenges, and enable breakthroughs in materials science."
Gates Cambridge Scholarships fund the work of outstanding international postgraduate students who show strong leadership potential and a commitment to improving the lives of others.
Passionate about ensuring quantum technologies are developed for the betterment of human lives, Rishi hopes to make a meaningful impact with his studies.
"I am very excited to join the Gates Cambridge community, where the scholarly commitment to rigorous research and positive social impact mirror my own ambitions,” he said.

Rishi joins 68 new scholars from around the world, bringing with them research that covers everything from the treatment of Crimea's Tatars to gravitational waves.
"Gates Cambridge is a brilliant programme that, year after year, takes in exceptional students from around the globe and prepares them to tackle the world's biggest challenges,” said Professor Deborah Prentice, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge and Chair of the Board of the Gates Cambridge Trust.
“We are enormously proud of our Gates Cambridge scholars and look forward to welcoming the Class of 2026 in October.”
