Project level: Honours, Summer

When two superfluids are connected by a weak link, they exhibit the Josephson effect – oscillations in the current between the two fluids.  This project would numerically investigate how Josephson oscillations decay at finite temperature using the classical field methodology. This behaviour has been described previously using a phenomenological model of dissipation (the Caldeira-Leggett model, originally applied to tunnel junctions in superconductors). The idea here is to implement a microscopic model, and see whether the phenomenological model is sound!  Experiments on this topic have been performed at UQ, without success. This project will help guide further efforts in this area.
