An atom laser is a device that spits out atoms in the same way that an optical laser spits out light: That is, it creates an atomic matterwave with a well defined wavelength, amplitude and phase. Such a system is interesting for practical applications such as precision measurement, but is also a nice test-bed for investigating some of the weirder aspects of quantum mechanics, such as quantum entanglement. This theoretical project would involve using quantum mechanics to investigate the properties of such a device.
