Leesa Wockner

"I enjoy the logic and theory of statistics and mathematics, but I love putting my skills to practical use."

Why did you study maths and statistics?

UQ, in particular the mathematics and statistics department, are held in high esteem and this was certainly a factor when choosing where to study.

What was the best part of your time at UQ?

I enjoyed the St Lucia campus and its facilities, and am still in contact with former lecturers. I was given exposure to research early on in my studies which led me to choose the career I have today.

What kind of things do you do in your current job?

I provide statistical advice to scientists at QIMR Berghofer and the adjoining RBWH. Additionally, I collaborate on projects that require substantial statistical input. This encompasses a variety of projects such as next generation sequencing, epigenetics, longitudinal studies of quality of life in cancer patients, and evaluation of treatments in burns patients, just to name a few.

I also provide statistical education to QIMR staff and researchers, delivering a 6-week course each year.

What is your favourite part of your job?

I love working on cutting edge projects, like methylation patterns in brain tissue of patients with schizophrenia, or the transmission of dengue fever by mosquitos. There certainly is never a dull moment!
