SCIE1000 tutors win Student Partnership Impact Award (UK)

16 Aug 2024

Congratulations to UQ's School of Mathematics and Physics (SMP) casual academics (tutors), Olivia Jessop, Liam Timms and Sarah Hampson for securing a Student Partnership Impact Award from SEDA (Staff and Educational Development Association, UK) in collaboration with Jisc. The award recognises student teams who have gone above and beyond their standard institutional role, and have had identifiable impact or influence within their course, department or university.

Olivia, Liam and Sarah demonstrated sustained high-quality teaching in the SCIE1000 online workshops and showed an extraordinary commitment to improving the student experience by overhauling the design and delivery of classes to ensure a more engaging and equitable experience for all external students. The materials they created are permanently implemented in the course and will provide a guide for future tutors. This UQ Student-Staff Partnership project provides a positive case study for a model of practice of including students in course resource development.

The project was presented at the National First Year in Maths Conference 2023 (hosted by UQ); was cited in a presentation by La Trobe University at this year’s conference, with the group intending to trial the methods in their own course; and was also presented at EduCon 2024 (the Australian Society of Microbiology) earlier this year.

With support from SMP, Olivia will be presenting this project at the upcoming Australian Conference on Science and Mathematics Education in Canberra.
