About

We're committed to excellence in learning, discovery and engagement within the disciplines of mathematics, statistics and physics.

Researchers, teachers and students from around the world are drawn to our vibrant academic environment at UQ’s stunning St Lucia campus.

Research excellence

We have an established international reputation for research excellence.

Many of our academic staff are world leaders in their fields, and we host nodes of four ARC Centres of Excellence, and numerous other research centres and groups.

Our membership of the prestigious Group of Eight and Universitas 21 networks ensures that our students and staff can collaborate with the best researchers both here and abroad.

In the most recent Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) rankings exercise, we achieved the highest score of '5 - well above world standard' in the disciplines of statistics, physical sciences, astronomical and space science, condensed matter physics, and quantum physics.

We produce more than 200 peer-reviewed publications every year.

Strong industry links

Our research and teaching sucesses are underpinned by our long-standing links with industry and government.

We work closely with our partners on a wide range of collaborations, including research projects, commercialisation ventures, and student industry placements and internships.

These connections enable our staff, students and affiliates to exchange knowledge and create change.

Dedicated staff, exceptional graduates

Our committed staff community comprises more than 110 academic and research colleagues, and more than 20 professional colleagues.

Currently our experts share their knowledge with our 7,500 enrolled undergraduates and 200-plus enrolled postgraduates.

Our researchers have received many prestigious accolades, including Australian Academy of Science Fellowships, Australian Research Council Federation Fellowships, Future Fellowships, Discovery Early Career Research Awards, and Discovery Outstanding Researcher Awards.

Between 2010 and 2015, our teaching and learning colleagues earned six National Teaching Citations and Awards and four UQ Teaching Citations.

Our high-calibre graduates leave us equipped to apply their skills and knowledge to real-life challenges.

Our alumni work around the world in diverse careers throughout academia, industry and government.
