Keeping online mathematics students engaged is an ongoing challenge. At the University of Southern Queensland College, we offer students various mathematics courses that give students their entry requirements to undergraduate degree programs from teaching to engineering. The courses run across three campuses (Toowoomba, Springfield, and Ipswich), online and in prisons. Most of our students study online which means we must find ways to keep them engaged. Many of our students struggle with maths which brings their own challenges. In this talk I will demonstrate the types of engagements we have used in two of our courses, Tertiary Preparation Mathematics 1 (350 in S1) and 2 (80 in S1). We have used online quizzes, videos, Padlet and google docs though not all have been easily adapted for maths problems. I will show how these were utilised by the students and which ones were successful or not at increasing engagement.
About Teaching and learning seminars
Our teaching and learning seminars focus on innovations and projects that are underway in teaching mathematics, statistics and physics at UQ and other institutions.
We discuss the hot issues, and hear from people who are trying out new things.
Over the past 10 years many new ideas have been generated, collaborations made both within and across disciplines, and teaching grant proposals designed, submitted and received.
Students, staff and visitors to UQ are welcome to attend, and to suggest speakers and topics.
