Abstract

In this talk I will describe how atoms may be used to test the standard model of particle physics and search for new physics beyond. I will focus on weak-interaction effects that are manifested through forbidden atomic transitions (atomic parity violation) and through parity- and time-reversal-violating atomic electric dipole moments. These precision studies provide information about possible new physics that appears at the TeV scale and beyond, exceeding the energy reach of the Large Hadron Collider. The talk will be given from the perspective of an atomic theorist, and the current status of the theory and the challenges that we face will be presented.
