Dr Valentin Buciumas (The University of Queensland)

The representation theory of p-adic groups is an important part of the Langlands program; it has many important applications to automorphic forms and number theory. The discovery of quantum groups on the other hand was motivated by statistical mechanics and solvable lattice models. It turns out you can relate the representation theory of p-adic GL_r to that of quantum affine gl_n. The relation goes through the Iwahori (affine) Hecke algebra. I will explain this relation and talk about two problems that are motivated by the p-adic theory, but are easier to solve in the quantum setting. One is the work of Gurevich on branching laws for p-adic GL_r, the other is my own work on Whittaker models for metaplectic GL_r. I will also explain, time permitting, how one can relate other p-adic groups to the quantum world.

About Pure mathematics seminars

We present regular seminars on a range of pure mathematics interests. Students, staff and visitors to UQ are welcome to attend, and to suggest speakers and topics.

Seminars are usually held on Tuesdays from 3pm to 3.50pm.

Talks comprise 45 minutes of speaking time plus five minutes for questions and discussion.

Information for speakers

Researchers in all pure mathematics fields attend our seminars, so please aim your presentation at a general mathematical audience.
