Project level: PhD

A composite structure made from scatterers embedded in a medium can have useful bulk optical properties. The case where the incident light exerts force or torque on the scatterers is of particular interest and will be investigated.

If the scatterers are arranged in a periodic lattice two- and three-dimensional photonic crystals can be realised. One goal is to investigate the use of complex scatterers as photonic crystal elements. The use of optical forces associated with multiple scattering for self-assembly or active control of photonic crystals will be investigated.
