8 Nov 2023
   Professor Jessica Purcell

On Thursday, 23 November 2023 the Inaugural Nesbit Lecture hosted by UQ’s School of Mathematics and Physics from the late Dr John Nesbit's bequest will be presented by by Professor Jessica Purcell from Monash University, whose research is in geometry and topology. Her lecture will highlight knot theory.

Of the topic, Professor Purcell says:

While knots are familiar objects, arising in shoe laces and phone chargers around the world, the mathematics of knot theory is both broad and deep, with applications ranging from quantum physics to protein molecules. From simple circles, to spheres in four dimensions, to hyperbolic geometry, the talk will delve into knot theory.
