Speaker: Professor Timothy Trudgian
Affiliation: UNSW Sydney
Abstract:
Euclid’s algorithm for division allows us to divide two numbers, keep track of remainders, and recover GCDs. I will discuss other algebraic settings: some rings are known to be Euclidean (meaning they have this algorithm), some are known not to be; many are unknown. I will end with a summary of recent work done https://arxiv.org/abs/2507.05862 that resolves completely the case of cyclic cubic fields. Oh, and there will be a prize!
About Pure mathematics seminars
We present regular seminars on a range of pure mathematics interests. Students, staff and visitors to UQ are welcome to attend, and to suggest speakers and topics.
Seminars are usually held on Tuesdays from 2 to 3pm.
Talks comprise 45 minutes of speaking time plus five minutes for questions and discussion.
Information for speakers
Researchers in all pure mathematics fields attend our seminars, so please aim your presentation at a general mathematical audience.
