UQ's Queensland Mathematics Summer School (QMSS) introduces Year 10 students to the beauty of advanced mathematical ideas and new ways of thinking.

Hosted by UQ's School of Mathematics and Physics each January, the week-long non-residential program is open to talented students who are going into Year 11 and have chosen to study Maths Methods and Specialist Maths.

What you'll learn

You'll spend a week living and breathing mathematics, delving into the deep, difficult, fun, mysterious, abstract, interconnected and, of course, useful aspects of this fascinating subject.

Exploring undergraduate and some graduate-level topics, you'll:

  • gain mathematical knowledge, problem-solving skills and confidence to use in a possible career in maths and science, in maths competitions, or just for yourself
  • study with mathematicians who are passionate about their subject – from high-level researchers to graduate students just starting their careers, our maths minds are eager to share their knowledge with you
  • make friends from around the state who share your passion for maths.

Who is eligible

Students attending QMSS must have chosen to study Maths Methods and Specialist Maths in senior school.

Program details

QMSS is a non-residential school. It is held at UQ St Lucia from Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm.

Your parent or guardian will need to arrange your transport to and from UQ each day. 


The cost of QMSS is $250, including morning tea and lunch.
