Queensland Mathematics Summer School
UQ’s Queensland Mathematics Summer School (QMSS) introduces Year 11 students to the beauty of advanced mathematical ideas and new ways of thinking.
Hosted by UQ’s School of Mathematics and Physics each year, this multi-day non-residential program is aimed at current Year 10 students who have passion for mathematics and are looking forward to their senior years' studies in mathematics. Students commencing Year 11 in 2025 who have chosen to study QCE Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics or IB Mathematics (HL or SL) are invited to apply for the 2025 event.
QMSS is an inclusive program designed for all students who love maths! The program will be led by mathematicians from a wide range of backgrounds, and we are enthusiastic about having a diverse range of students from all schools and identities involved. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from across Queensland as well as women, nonbinary and LGBTQIA+ students are particularly encouraged to apply.
What you’ll learn
You’ll delve into a number of deep, difficult, fun, mysterious, abstract, interconnected and even useful aspects of this fascinating subject.
- Explore and immerse yourself in mathematics. Previous topics have included artificial intelligence, number theory, abstract algebra, machine learning, cryptography, and pandemic modelling through interactive lectures, tutorials and seminars.
- Develop and extend your mathematical skills in problem solving, communication, analysis and reasoning.
- Learn from mathematicians who are passionate about their subject – from globally renowned researchers to experts in mathematical education, and current students, who are all keen to share their experience and knowledge.
- Make friends with a diverse cohort of students from around the state and discover how much fun it is to be around people who are passionate about mathematics.
Financial Support
- There are some options for needs-based financial support: fee waivers and travel/accommodation bursaries. Eligible students are invited to apply for these as part of their overall application process.
