Abstract

Since the 1940s, many artificial elements were discovered; elements with atomic numbers above 103 are referred to as superheavy elements. These artificial elements are produced using nuclear reactors and particle accelerators. Following the discovery of new elements, their spectroscopic and chemical properties are studied in challenging experiments that push the limits of our knowledge of electronic structure and probe the extreme effects of relativity.
