SMP Industry Summer Experience
This program is now in its third year of running. It allows industrial affiliates to hire SMP students for summer internships. Our students get a chance to experience industrial work and the industrial affiliates get a chance to tap into the young talent we have at SMP.
Students – PROGRAM NOW CLOSED FOR 2016/17.
From early October, 15 projects are available with industry partners and these have been advertised to UQ students studying mathematics, physics and statistics. Students must apply directly to the School (via email address - email@example.com) by 31 October 2016. Interviews may be required with the industry partner during November. Successful interns will commence their summer internship at a date negotiated with the organisation, usually commencing December until January and receive a scholarship. Dr Thomas Taimre is available to discuss the program with interested students on Mondays 1-2pm in room 451, Priestley Building (67). For other times, please contact Dr Taimre.
On May 10th 2016, industry representatives had the opportunity to hear what our students had to say about their summer internships and the verdict is all positive on both sides. The summer internships with industry partners are proving to be a defining experience for students. Student feedback illustrated how their university knowledge shapes up when exposed to authentic workplace situations. At this event, four students presented their intern experience with industry-leading companies including Aginic, Boeing, Certus Solutions, and SilverRail Technologies which seek graduates with skills in mathematics, statistics and physics. Polymathian, Biarri and The Simulation Group helped to lead the way in the first years of the program for our Maths students, and at the May event, many company representatives were invited to meet School staff and students to learn more about the program.
