Abstract

Through-earth wireless communication has important applications for Defence, mining, and space exploration. Typical wireless signals are strongly attenuated by the ground and/or water; instead, we must use low frequency (< 1 kHz) fields, for which attenuation is relatively low. Magnetometers are an effective and compact means of detecting these fields. We are using cutting-edge nanofabrication techniques to develop new types of magnetometers that are small in size, light weight, and have low power requirements. I will discuss the development of our first on-chip integrated optomechanical magnetometer candidate for such applications.

About Physics Seminars

The weekly Physics Seminar series focuses on a broad range of physics research within SMP, along with frequent presentations from visiting researchers. Seminars are usually scheduled for 1.00pm on Tuesdays.

The talks are typically more specialised than a colloquium but are often attended by staff and PhD students across a broad range of areas. Speakers are thus encouraged to include introductory material in the talks.
