One beautiful equation can change everything

UQ's Adjunct Associate Professor Adrian Dudek

For Dr Adrian Dudek, mathematics isn’t just about formulas and problem sets –  it is about discovering patterns, beauty, and powerful ways to understand the world.

The discovery was underscored in one of his first University of Queensland lectures.

“The professor hastily scrawled an equation describing a beautiful connection between the square numbers and the mathematical constant Pi,” Dr Dudek said.

“He stood there appreciating it, and that was new to me – that maths itself was a form that could be appreciated and not just applied to solve complex problems or build new things.

“This was the moment when I realised that pure mathematics was the field for me.”

That moment sparked a journey through honours in pure mathematics, a PhD in analytic number theory, and a decade in quantitative trading.

Dr Dudek then returned to UQ as an Associate Adjunct Professor, where he now balances industry with research, teaching and supervision.

His story reflects one of mathematics’ greatest strengths: its versatility.

“Mathematics underpins everything,” Dr Dudek said.

“There’s always some hot area that students are driven towards by lucrative careers, such as actuarial science, quantitative finance, machine learning and AI.

“These are always mathematical at heart, so maths has proven time and time again to be the signal amongst the noise.”

At UQ, students build deep theoretical foundations while exploring real-world applications across finance, data science, technology and beyond.

For many, this leads to emerging careers in quantitative trading and research – industries that are aggressively seeking mathematically trained graduates.

But the rewards go far beyond employability – for students who are drawn to abstraction and logic, mathematics offers a uniquely personal payoff.

As Dr Dudek puts it, quoting author Jordan Ellenberg, “mathematics is the extension of common sense by other means”.

“A maths graduate can quantify, model and predict what most others cannot,” he said.

“This not only brings about the immense personal satisfaction of one’s curiosity but also helps forge bespoke career paths where one can move between fields of interest.

“Whether your passion lies in pure theory, cutting-edge technology, or solving complex real-world problems, mathematics provides the tools – and the freedom – to shape your own future.

“All it takes is one striking equation to change the path you are on.”
