UQ physicist recognised with prestigious medal

Dr WegenerThe University of Queensland School of Mathematics and Physics academic Dr Margaret Wegener has been awarded the 2016 Australian Institute of Physics (AIP) Education Medal, recognising her outstanding contribution to University physics education in Australia.

Dr Wegener, who is a UQ lecturer, received the award at this week’s AIP Congressat the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Head of the Physics Discipline Associate Professor Tim McIntyre congratulated Dr Wegener, who he said was a dedicated and enthusiastic staff member with a strong interest in providing high-quality education.

“She has made significant contributions across diverse areas including undergraduate teaching, physics education research and services to the wider community,” he said.

“Margaret designs and delivers quality educational experiences across a wide range of settings to diverse student cohorts, supported by significant contributions to the scholarship of teaching and learning.

“As a teaching-focused UQ staff member, Margaret has had a major impact in developing teaching practices within physics, including the introduction of active learning classes and inquiry-based laboratory experiments.”

Associate Professor McIntyre said a recent Australian Institute of Physics review noted the “innovative and progressive” nature of UQ’s physics undergraduate program.

Dr Wegener has more than 15 years’ experience as a university lecturer in physics, and earlier, years of experience as a university tutor.

She has taught more than 8000 students.

“Margaret’s efforts are much appreciated by her colleagues and have been recognised by awards at both University and national levels,” he said.

Dr Wegener’s PhD was awarded in the field of laser diagnostics of a Superorbital Expansion Tube (a ground test facility for testing hypersonic concepts).
