Indigenous astronomy

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have studied and surveyed the movements of celestial bodies for millennia.

UQ astrophysics researchers acknowledge the role of Indigenous astronomy in society and welcome collaboration from researchers, students, industry professionals and the public.

We aim to increase outreach programs to support First Nations people and cultures, and to create valued resources and opportunities to honour Australia’s earliest astronomers.

Indigenous astronomy’s rich history

Indigenous astronomers survey and study the solar system to navigate, predict weather and track seasonal food cycles.

They use the sun, moon and stars to:

help navigate journeys across land, oceans and waterways
identify stops for food, shelter and geographical landmarks
predict the weather and readily available food sources.

Today, Indigenous astronomy continues to inform the law, social structure and narratives passed down by Traditional custodians through song, dance and oral traditions.

Research insights

Astrophysicist, science communicator and Wiradjuri woman Kirsten Banks delivered the Astronomical Society of Australia’s Harley Wood Public Lecture at UQ in 2019.

Her presentation – ‘65,000 years: The rich history of Aboriginal astronomy’ – offers research insights and examines the use of stars in Indigenous culture and their relevance today.
